Stansted

Location: The airfield is close to the village of Stansted Mountfichet, and close to the M11 motorway.
Date opened: US Engineers of 817th Battalion arrived during July 1942 and the airfield was ready for use in July 1943.
Operational Status: The base was placed under the command of the Ninth Air Force Service Command, and Stansted became known as No 2 Tactical Air Depot. It was not until February 1944 that the first operational combat unit group arrived. This was the 344th Medium Bomb Group flying B-26 aircraft. On 12th August 1945 the US Airforce handed back the airfield to the RAF, who brought in a maintenance unit No 263. 
Airfield Closed: The April 1957 the Americans finally left Stansted having lengthened the runway to 3,048 metres, and in June 1985 the airfield became London's third Airport.
