Stapleford Tawney

Location: South Side of the M25 and East of the M11 near the village of Abridge
Date opened: Stapleford Tawney was a small private airfield opened some time before the second world war, however, in 1938 its was taken over by the Air Ministry for use as a flying training school. In 1938 No21 Elementary and Reserve flying training school was established at the airfield.
Operational Status: In March 1940 the airfield became a satellite station for North Weald. Operational squadrons at Stapleford Tawney were, No 151, No 46, No 242, No 277. Up till March 1943 all these squadrons and the airfield, had been under the control of No 11 Group of Fighter Command. However in March 1943 the airfield passed to No 34 Wing of the Army Co-operation Command. The airfield was home to only one of their squadron's and this was No 656.
Airfield Closed: There is no exact date when the airfield ceased to be used by either the Army or the RAF but it is presumed to be at the end of the war like a lot of other RAF airfields.
Current Status:  Today the airfield is once again a private airfield not only teaching but also running some small business flights.
