Great Dunmow

Location: Near the Town of Great Dunmow.
Date opened: Summer 1943
Operational Status: Closed, returned to Agriculture
Airfield Closed: Unknown at present
Current Status:  The airfield was situated on the once lovely estate owned by the Marynard family. This site was to be designated for the Eighth Airforce in August 1942.  Within a matter of two weeks construction was started by the 818th US Engineer Aviation Battalion, the completion date for the airfield was March 1943.However by the spring of 1943 only the Runways and perimeter tracks had been laid. The airfield was not finally completed until the summer of 1943.

The first occupants of the airfield were the 386th Bomb Group who moved in from Boxted on the 25th September 1943, this group were equipped with the Boeing B26s. The 386th along with three other Groups was transferred to the Ninth Airforce on the 16th October 1943. By the middle of November 1943 the group along with 332nd was placed in the 99th Bomb Wing which had set up its headquarters at Great Dunmow.

The Group stayed at Great Dunmow until 2nd October 1944 when it left for an airfield at Beaumont-Sur-Oise in France. The airfield was handed back to the Royal Airforce and two squadrons arrived within two weeks of the Americans leaving. They were No 190 with their Short Sterling IV's and No 260 also with Short Stirling's a few days after. Both of these squadrons were in No 38 Group.

The end of 1944 saw the airfield very active with Horsa Gliders as there were two Glider servicing units now based at Great Dunmow. No 1526 Blind Approach Training Unit equipped with Airspeed Oxfords along with an Operational Refresher Training unit were also based there.

By the end of 1945 both Short's Sterling squadrons had left Great Dunmow, at present I have no date for when the airfield was closed. However there are memorials along the A120 near where the airfield was and a memorial chapel at the Little Easton Parish Church which stands on the edge of the old airfield.
