Royal Air Force Bases in The United Kingdom

RAF Aldergrove

Location:

Status: Active

Functions: Aldergrove first opened in 1918, but only for a year, the base became fully operational in 1925. With the out break of World War Two Aldergrove became an important base for Coastal Command.

 

The base is now home mainly to a mixed complement of Helicopters which operate in support of the army. These are 8 Wessex HC2s and 5 Puma HC1s of 72 Squadron and 13 Pumas of 230 Squadron. These Squadrons make the main stay of the bases aircraft but there also detachments from No.3 Squadron (RAF Regiment) which operate Puma's and Chinook's and Two Army Training Corps.

Amport House

Location:

Functions: Amport house is the home  of the armed Forces Chaplain centre, the centre was opened on the 1st April 1996. It provides religious and welfare support for uniformed personnel of all three services. 

There has been a military presence at Amport House since 1962 when the original service (the RAF's Chaplin's school moved there from Dowdswell Court in Cheltenham). 

Amport House was also the Second World Head Quarters of maintenance command.

RAF Bampton Castle

Functions: Bampton Castle is a parented station of Brize Norton, the work done at both of stations is High Frequency communications. There are two squadrons based there, these are No 2 and No 81 Signals Units.

RAF Barkston Heath

Functions: RAF Barkston Heath has two roles, firstly it is home to the Joint Elementary Flying Training School which operates 18 MKII Firefly two seat trainers and secondly it is a Relief Landing Ground for the flying training activities at RAF Cranwell.

RAF Benbecula

Functions: Benbecula is home to a Control and Reporting Post (CRP) part of the United Kingdom Air Surveillance and Control System. The base is situated in the outer Hebrides and has long range radar units covering the North Atlantic approaches to Scotland.

RAF Benson

Location:

Status: Active

Functions: RAF Benson first opened in 1939, During the Second World War Benson was home to No 1 Photographic Reconnaissance Unit. At the end of the war Benson became home to the Queen's Flight. 

 

At Present Benson is home to 15 Pumas of 33 Squadron, (the Queen's flight having moved to Northolt in 1995). Other Squadron's at Benson include the London and Oxford University Air Squadron's with Tutor T1's, No 6 Air Experience Flight, Two RAuxAF/RAF Reserve Units the Helicopter Support Squadron and the Meteorological Unit.

Benson is also Home to the new Merlin HC3s which are new to RAF service, these are operated by No 28 Squadron.

RAF Bentley Priory

Functions: RAF Bentley Priory is the Headquarters of No 11 group, responsible for the Air Defence of the UK in wartime, and the security of the UK airspace in peace time

RAF Boddington

Functions: RAF Boddington is a signals station, it is home to No 9 signals unit and headquarters TARE units.

RAF Boscombe Down

Location:

Functions: Boscombe Down is the home to the "Aircraft and Armament Experimental Establishment" and has been so for a number of years. The base is occupied by a number of units, these are the empire Test Pilots school, the Strike/Attack Operational Evaluation Unit, and the Southampton University Air Squadron.

RAF Boulmer

Functions: RAF Boulmer opened in 1943 and today is the home to the School of Fighter Control and is one of the control and reporting centres in the UK ASACS system. The station is also home to the headquarters and "A" flight of 202 squadron with 2 Sea King HAR3s providing search and rescue and mountain cover to the borders.

RAF Brampton

Functions: RAF Brampton is home to the Joint Air Reconnaissance Centre, but in addition it provides support to a number of other lodger units including elements of the DLO. It is also the base for the Defence Security Standards Organization and RAF infrastructure Organization East Region.

RAF Brize Norton

Location:

Status: Active

Functions: RAF Brize Norton is the largest Station in the UK, it is the nerve centre for the air transport capabilities of the RAF. The station was opened in 1937 and was used as a training base for airborne forces. This continued throughout World War Two until 1950 when the base was handed over to the United States Air Force. The base was operated by Strategic Air Command who stationed B-29s and B-47s there until the Royal Air force took the base back to operate tankers and Transporters from there. 

 

Today the base is used by the 11 VC10 C1Ks of 10 Squadron, the 8 VC10 K3 and K4s of 101 Squadron, the 8 Tristar K1, KC1 and C2As of 216 Squadron and 2624 (County of Oxford) Royal Auxiliary Air force Regiment Field Squadron and sister RAuxAF Squadron, No 4624. .

As well as these Squadrons there are a number of other units based at Brize Norton. They are No 1 Parachute Training Squadron, this includes the well known RAF Parachute Display Team. 

 

A new arrival for 2001 at Brize Norton was the No 99 squadron and there Boeing C-17 Globemaster Transport Aircraft which are on lease to the Royal Air Force from the Boeing Corporation.

RAF Buchan

Functions: RAF Buchan was opened in 1952 and operated as an Air Defence Radar Unit. Today the base is home to a Control and Reporting Centre. RAF Buchan is responsible for coordinating all aspects of air Defence for the Northern UK Air Defence Region. In this role RAF Buchan works closely with other units in Scandinavia..

RAF Chivenor

Status: Active

Functions: RAF Chivenor first started life as a civil airfield in the 1930s, before it was taken over by the RAF in the 1940s as as a coastal Command Station. After the war the base was mainly used for training, particularly weapons training, as Chivenor was home to No 2 Tactical Weapons Unit

Fixed wing flying continued at Chivenor unit 1994 after which the base  was used as home to "A" Flight of 22 Squadron who are equipped with two Sea King HAR3A helicopters for Search and Rescue duties. RAF Chivenor is also home to No 624 Volunteer Gliding School operating Vigilant T1 motor gliders.

RAF Church Fenton

Functions: The Base at church Fenton is home to Yorkshire University Air Squadron. The squadron Flies Tutors T1s. The base also acts as a relief landing ground for the T1s from Linton-on-Ouse.

RAF Coningsby

Location:

Status: Active

Functions: RAF Coningsby started life in 1940 as a heavy bomber base, coming under No 5 Group Bomber Command. Coningsby stayed a heavy bomber base until 1964 when the Vulcan Squadron which was based there moved to Cottesmore. Coningsby is now home to two operational Squadrons,  No 5 squadron which operates 12 Tornado F3s and No 56 (Reserve) Squadron. In addition to this Coningsby is also home to  the Tornado F3 Operational Conversion Unit with 19 Tornado F3s and the Tornado Operational Evaluation Unit.

 

As Well as being an operational Base it is also home the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight which operates 5 Spitfires, Two Hurricanes, the only flying Lancaster in Europe as well as Two Chipmunks and one Dakota. Coningsby was the first RAF station to operate the Air Defence Variant of the Tornado.

RAF Corsham

Functions: Corsham is home to the UK National Distribution Agency having moved from Thatcham.

RAF Cosford

Location:

Functions: RAF Cosford opened in 1938 and acted as training school for RAF grounds tradesmen. Today the base is used by No1 School of Technical Training, and two air squadrons of No 633 volunteer Gliding School who use Vigilant T1s and The Birmingham University Air squadron operating Tutor T1s.

RAF Cottesmore

Functions: RAF Cottesmore is home to all the Front-Line RAF Harrier Squadrons, Nos 3 and 4 Squadrons bringing their 26 Harrier GR7s and T10s from RAF Laarbruch when the station was closed. The other RAF squadron to move there was No 1 (F) from RAF Wittering leaving the base after 31 years. No 1 squadron is equipped with 12 Harrier GR7s and 1 T10. As Cottesmore will be home to all the UK's Harriers, the Royal Navy's Sea Harriers will also move to Cottesmore.

 

Cottesmore's past history has been quite interesting. after its wartime expansion it has been used for bomber squadrons, Troop carrying, Electronic counter measures and Training.

RAF Coltishall

Location: North of Coltishall near Lamas

Status: Active

Functions: RAF Coltishall opened its doors in May 1940 and was home to night-fighters, intruder and anti-shipping Squadrons. Over its entire life Coltishall has been home to fighters. One of the most famous Jet fighters was the English Electric Lightning, and Coltishall became the first airfield to be equipped with this aircraft, one in a long line of achievements for the air base.

 

Today Coltishall is home to the entire RAF Jaguar fleet of all types and all requirements from fighter-bomber role, photo reconnaissance to training and conversion which makes it a very busy airfield.

RAF Cranwell

Functions: RAF Cranwell is home to its Officer Cadet Training College, the base has been used for Cadet Training Since 1918. Also based at Cranwell is the RAF's Aerobatic Display Team, the Red Arrows, No 3 Flying Training School operating 10 Jetstream T1s,  (45(reserve) Squadron) operating 8 Dominie T1s and (55(Reserve) Squadron) operating 16 Tutor T1s.  

 

As well as that the Air Warfare Centre is stationed at Cranwell, one of Cranwell other roles is a satellite airfield for RAF Barkston Heath.

RAF Digby

Functions: RAF Digby is home to 591 Signals unit and the Aerial Erector school. It is also home to the Joint Services Signals Unit which until September 1998 had been No 399 signals unit.

RAF Dishforth

RAF Headley Court

RAF Henlow

Functions: RAF Henlow is home to the Directorate of Engineering Interoperability (DEI), which is part of the Defence Communications Services Agency (DCSA) within the DLO. 

In addition it houses the joint arms control and inspection group, HQ Provost & Security Services (RAF), including the newly-formed Tactical Provost Wing, the RAF Centre for Aviation Medicine (CAM) and No 616 Volunteer Gliding school which operates Vigilant T1 motor gliders.

RAF Honington

RAF Kinloss

Functions: RAF Kinloss was opened in 1939, its first role was training Heavy Bomber crews. This continued with the arrival No 6 OTU training crews on Beaufighters and Mosquitos after which these were  followed by Lancaster's and Shackletons. In 1971 6 OTU moved onto Nimrod the Aircraft when it entered service.

 

RAF Kinloss has now become home to all the fleet of Nimrods (21 aircraft), these are shared between Nos 120, 201 and 206 Squadrons. As well as this there are 3 Nimrod MR2s also at Kinloss operated by No 42 Squadron, the Nimrod Operational Conversion Unit.

RAF Lackenheath

RAF Leconfield

Functions: The main role RAF Leconfield plays today is a base for the RAF's Search and Rescue Commitments. Leconfield is home 2 Sea King HAR3s of "E" Flight of No 202 Squadron, and operate over the North Sea.

RAF Leeming

Status: Active

Functions: Flying at RAF Leeming began in July 1940 under Bomber Command, the aircraft to fly out of Lemming included types such as Whitley's, Sterling, Halifax, and Lancaster's. After the Second World War, the Bombers left and Leeming became a Night Fighter Station. The first aircraft to be stationed there were Mosquito's followed by Meteors and Javelin Jet Fighters. 

 

In 1961 the role of the airfield changed again when it became a training airfield under Training Command, Leeming remained a training airfield until the 1980's when the base was closed for a major refurbishment. In 1988 the base reopened and Today is home to Tornado F3s under No 11/18 Group within Strike Command.

RAF Leuchars

Functions: Aviation history at Leuchars can be traced back to 1911 when military balloons were operated from the site. Before the Second World War the base was also used as a RNAS fleet fighter station and a Coastal Command Station. After World War Two the base became a fighter command station a role which it continues today as one of the RAFs Air Defence Bases operating Tornado Aircraft. 

The base has a number of other roles including Mountain Rescue, Air Transportable Surgical Units and three University Air Squadrons.

RAF Linton-Upon-Ouse

Status: Active

Functions: Linton-on-Ouse is a training base and one of the busiest in the country. Linton-on-Ouse first started life in 1937 and has been used for Bombers, Fighters and Transport aircraft. 

In 1957 the base moved on to training and started off with Jet Provosts and now use Tucano T1s these are operated by No 1 flying training school who operate 78 of these aircraft.

RAF Locking

Status: Active

Functions: RAF Locking is the home of the No1 Radio School and is responsible for training airmen as ground electronics mechanics and technicians. The Western Band of the Royal Air Force is also a long term resident of the station.

RAF Lossiemouth

Location:

Status: Active

Functions: Lossiemouth started life in 1939 as a flying training school, in 1940 the base was handed over to Bomber Command and was used by No 20 Operational Training Unit and No 46 Maintenance Unit.

 

After World War Two Lossiemouth became a satellite for RAF Milltown under Coastal command, this then changed to HMS Fulmar of the Royal Navy in 1946. The Primary task being Fleet Air Arm operations.

 

The Station returned to the RAF in September 1972 and over the years has become a very important station to the RAF. A number of aircraft types have flown from this station in various roles including Whirlwind, Jaguar, Shackleton, Sea King, Hunter, Buccaneer and Tornado.

 

Today the Base is home to three operational units flying tornado's plus a number of other units making the station a very busy and important one.

RAF Lyneham

Functions: Lyneham first started life as flying training base but quickly moved on to a base for Air transport. The airfield was the first RAF station to operate jet transports, in the form of Comet C2s which arrived in 1956. Today Lyneham is the RAF's major tactical transport station operating Hercules C130 Aircraft.

RAF Marham

Functions: RAF Marham started life in the 1930's and during World War Two was used as a Heavy Bomber station. It has also been used as a fighter station. In 1993 Marham became home to a major part of the RAF's reconnaissance units, with four squadrons currently flying from there, operating Tornado GR1A/GR4As as well as Camberra PR9s and Camberra T4s.

RAF Neatishead

Functions: RAF Neatishead is the control and reporting centre responsible for the UK air Defence, CRC Neatishead works closely with the Dutch, German and French CRC's and like Buchan, is involved in several NATO training exercises yearly.

RAF North Luffenham

RAF Northolt

Location:

Status: Active

Functions: RAF Northolt was one of the key airfields in the Defence of London during the Battle of Britain. After the Second World War Northolt became the major airport for London until the new site at Heathrow was opened. 

 

Once Heathrow opened Northolt continued to be used by the RAF as a station for Transport Command. Today Northolt still provides transport but for VIP's instead of Cargo. 

 

This role is performed by No 32 (Royal) Squadron who operate BAe125s, BAE146s and Squirrel HCC1s.

Other units based at Northolt are No 1 (County of Middlesex) Maritime Headquarters Unit and a small station flight operating a single Islander CC2.

RAF Northwood

Functions: RAF Northwood has many roles but including being known as HMS Warrior and the headquarters of No18 Group and the joint Maritime Headquarters.

RAF Oakhanger

Functions: RAF Oakhanger is the focal point of military satellite communications in the UK. Two satellite communications (SatCom) units are based at Oakhanger, No1001 Signals Unit and a NATO Satellite Ground Terminal.

RAF Odiham

Functions: RAF Odiham opened in 1936 as an Army Co-operation base. The station has had many roles over the years including Tactical reconnaissance and Fighters and in the later years Transportation. Transport is a role it still fulfills today being home to No's 7, 18 and 27 Squadrons flying a total of 30 Chinook HC2s between them. No 27 Squadron incorporates the Operational Conversion Unit for the Chinook.

RAF Pembrey Sands

RAF Prestwick

Functions: RAF Prestwick is home to the Scottish Air Traffic Control Centre and is responsible for providing radar services for both military and civilian aircraft. RAF Prestwick comes under the control of Headquarters Military Air Traffic Operations (MATO).

RAF Saxa Vord

Functions: RAF Saxa Vord in the Shetland Islands has had an association with the Royal Air force since 1957 when it became a Radar Station, today it is a Control and Reporting Post as part of the United kingdom Air surveillance and Control system giving warning of any aircraft approaching from the North.

RAF Sealand

Functions: RAF Sealand is home to No 30 Maintenance Unit and is responsible for the third line repair of airborne avionic equipment for all three Armed services. No 631 Volunteer Gliding School operates Viking TX1s from the south airfield.

RAF Shawbury

Status: Active

Functions: RAF Shawbury opened in 1917, the station has been used as a training base all its life. All the flying training now done at Shawbury is for Rotary winged aircraft, this work is under taken by the tri-services Defence Helicopter Flying School (DHFS) who operate Squirrel HT1 and Grffin HT1's helicopters. The squadrons that work within the school are 660, 705 and (60 (Reserve) Squadrons) respectively. 

Another school that has had a long association with Shawbury is the Central Air Traffic Control school which was set up when the system was in its infancy in 1944.

RAF Spadeadam

Status: Active

Functions: RAF Spadeadam became an RAF Station in 1976, and was used as  an Electronic Warfare range, it is now a NATO Electronic Countermeasures range.

RAF St. Athan

Location:

Status: Active

Functions: St Athan has a number of roles, the main one being that its is home to the RAF's maintenance base for Harrier, Tornado, Jaguar, Hawk, Dominie and VC10 aircraft. Its other roles are home to a Mountain rescue Unit, the University of Wales Air Squadron and No 634 Volunteer Glider School with Viking TX1s.

RAF St Mawgan

Functions: Today RAF St Mawgan is mainly used for Search and rescue along the South west Approaches. At present St Mawgan is home to 3 Sea King HAR3s of No 203 (Reserve) Squadron.

 

St Mawgan is also home to two field Squadron's, No 1 RAF Regiment and No 2625 (County of Cornwall) Squadron, RAuxAF. As well as that St Mawgan is also a parent unit to CRP Portreath on the North Cornish coast.

RAF Staxton wold

Location: North Yorkshire

Functions: RAF Staxton Wold is a Control and Reporting Centre in the UK Air Surveillance and Control System (ASACS) Staxton Wold was chosen by the RAF in 1937 as one of 16 sites for the then new radar as part of the Home Chain system. The site was fully operational by 1939. Today the station is the only one of the original sites still in operation. Which makes it the oldest operational Radar site in the World.

RAF Stafford

Functions:  RAF Stafford is home to No16 Maintenance Unit and serves as an Equipment Depot and No2 Mechanical Training Squadron and is responsible for providing transport assistance for unit moves and the handling of large or abnormal loads. Also at Stafford is the Tactical Supply Wing (TSW), which operates mobile aviation fuel handling facilities for helicopters and Harriers deployed in the field

RAF Uxbridge

Functions: RAF Uxbridge is home to the Headquarters of the Military Air Traffic Operations (MATO), Headquarters of the Music Services and No 63 Squadron of the RAF Regiment. Also the Battle of Britain Bunker museum.

RAF Valley

Location:

Status: Active

Functions: RAF Valley is situated on the Isle of Anglesey. In 1957 Valley become a training base and over the years has become the most important one in the country. Valley has a number of roles including Search and Rescue and Search and rescue Training done by the Search and Rescue Training Unit which operates 3 Griffin HT1s.  Also based there is No 4 flying Training School which operates 71 Hawk T1/T1A aircraft and incorporates the Central Flying School Advanced Training Unit.

RAF Waddington

Location:

Status: Active

Functions: RAF Waddington first started life as a Royal Flying Corps Training station in 1916, the station closed for a short between 1920 and 1926. In 1926 the base re-opened as a bomber base. This continued through the 1930's into the Second World War and only ended in 1984 when the last of the V bomber fleet in the form of the Vulcan Bombers were withdrawn from Service.

 

Today the station is host to a number of squadrons operating Nimrod R1s and Sentry AEW1s for both electronic reconnaissance and Airborne Early Warning a role carried out by many countries around the world. The squadrons based at Waddington are No 51squadron, No 8 Squadron, No 26 squadron and No 2503 (county of Lincoln) RAuxAF Field Squadron. The base also plays host to NATO Aircraft of many nations during exercises in the North Sea air combat range.

RAF Wainfleet

Functions: RAF Wainfleet is an East Coast Bombing Range.

RAF Wattisham

Location:

Status: Active

Functions:  Wattisham is no longer a fully operational air base. Toady its main role is to play host to a Helicopter Search and Rescue unit, "B" flight of No 22 Squadron. The Squadron is equipped with 2 Sea King HAR3A Helicopters.

RAF West Drayton

Functions: RAF West Drayton is the military air traffic control centre co-located with the civil London Area and Terminal Control Centre. The unit Provides a vital link between civil and military flying and airspace requirements.

RAF Wittering

Location:

Status: Active

Functions: Wittering (first called Stamford) started life in 1916 as a training airfield as part of the the Royal Flying Corps. The base remained a training base until 1935 when it became a fighter base, a role which it still fulfills today.

 

Wittering was known for many years as the "Home of the Harrier" but due to current changes in the way the armed forces are structured only one squadron of Harriers remain at Wittering. This is the Operational Conversion Unit for the Harrier, No 20 (Reserve) Squadron equipped with 9 Harrier GR7s and 5 Harrier T10s. As part of the on going changes the Sea Harriers of No 899 NAS, will be moving to Wittering from Yeovilton in the Future.

RAF Woodvale

Functions: Woodvale is home to the Liverpool and Manchester University Air Squadrons which both operate Tutor T1s, and No 10 Air experience Flight.

Functions: RAF Wyton is the main home to Equipment support (Air) ES (AIR). The base is also home to the Corporate Technical Services. The runway at Wyton has now been re-activated and is used by the University of London Air Squadron and the Cambridge University Air Squadron.
